Hi Ty! We are super excited to welcome you at the GlaGla Race! What does it represent for a waterman such as yourself who is used to warm conditions, waves and saltwater, to race in the Alps in the middle of winter?
I find that racing in potentially sub zero temperatures is a novelty, but with the higher level of athletes attending it turns into a challenge. Having the likes of Titouan Puyo, Ludovic Teulade and Martin Vitry you always know that when you get on the start line it’s going to be as competitive of a race as any.
There are more and more NSP riders attending the GlaGla Race, can you tell us more about the team?
The NSP team is a very tight knit family that I’ve grown to know and love. No matter where we are in the world, we always find the time to come together, have some fun and put on a show. I feel honoured to have been adopted into this amazing team. Having someone like Titouan Puyo to help guide the way as a mentor, fellow competitor, brother and friend has been something of an invaluable experience to me. I can’t wait to see what 2020 brings for me and the team.
What board are you intending to use for the GlaGla Race?
For the GlaGla Race 2020, I’ll be using the NSP Carolina. It definitely gives me the advantage for any condition Annecy has to throw at me.
You’re coming for the GlaGla Race, but the ski resorts aren’t that far away, are you planning on skiing during your stay?
That’s about all I’ll be doing during my stay here in France. I’ll be with the NSP Team (my second family) in Valmorel snowboarding, cross country skiing, mountaineering etc. – most of which are brand new to me, which I’m super excited to experience!
The 7th annual edition of this unique event looks set to attract one of the largest fields in the world, with a stunning backdrop of snow-covered mountains providing a picturesque paddling experience for the 800 competitors expected on the start line in Talloires, Lake Annecy.

Marie, you registered for the GlaGla Race 2019. Are you impatient to be there?
Yes the GlaGla is can’t miss event for all alpine lakes paddlers ! We meet so many SUP friends in the middle of winter! Good mood guaranteed! It’s a race that we do as a challenge, with a little luck under the snow! And I heared that there will be some great people for the 2019 edition, it’s a pleasure for international riders to move on an alpine lake.
You practice SUP all year round. How do you train in winter? What preparation and equipment for the alpine winter conditions ?
In fact it’s the first winter or I have to train here in the cold because last winter I had the chance to train in Fuerteventura. This season it was necessary that I take my marks on Lake Geneva in winter, it is 2 to 3 degrees and we are immersed in the fog … hard to find the motivation. With the coldest hard it’s before and after. But once I’m there it’s so good. In winter the lake offers a special atmosphere that I like very much. The sight of the snow-covered mountains make me feel better. I do about 4 training sessions on the water a week and I complete with other sports, cycling, bodybalance, bodybuilding, swimming and of course skiing. Seal skin is an excellent complement to work the body. And also I plan to go regularly to sea or ocean to work the downwind and the waves. I’m leaving this week in Tarifa.
The equipment? In race, I’m always too hot when I paddle, so running pants in goretex, thermal and windproof enough, even when it is 1 or 2 degrees. And of course, the slippers! I often add big socks to have warm calf … the look is not terrible but it is effective!
You finished 1st in the Alpine Lakes Tour 2018, a circuit that has accumulated 1250 participants. What makes it so successful?
Yes it was one of my 2018 goals. Mission accomplished! I would say rigorous and daily trainings. I am training Vincent Guillaume for over a year, which allowed me to progress well. A complete physical preparation because I practice other sports. My frequent trips to the ocean, when I come back rowing on the lake, the lake seems easier. Training with rowers and rowers much better than me, who really made me progress and especially that gave me the desire to improve again and again. I also think of an excellent board of flat, my sprint from Starboard, she is my most faithful ally, a rocket … And finally, to force my character! I try to be more efficient and optimize each exit on the water.

19 days to Go before the GlaGla Race ! As announced before we will give you a daily update with testimonials and infos about the participants, our partners, the content of the event, the volunteers, … (French version coming in a few minutes)
Alexandre, you participated in the last 4 editions of the GlaGla Race. What makes you come back?
There are several reasons. The first is the desire to find all the band of friends that I met at each edition. I come from Normandy, so I often stay 2, 3 days on site because the road is long we take the opportunity to eat well, drink shots and eliminate during the race ;-))))
The second is the magical setting of this race. You can not do it by lowering your head (it’s good because I’m not a beast podium !!!).
And finally the conviviality of this event which even by magnifying remains always cool. It’s the result of your work and the imprint of the spirit of a team that does not tell it …
What would you like more about the GlaGla Race?
A flea market sup, everyone could find good deals and no event does it to my knowledge (I know it’s complicated to manage with the brands partners but not everyone can afford to buy new …) And yurts for rent on the shores of the lake for the stay 😉 Otherwise for the rest everything is there …
Which advice (s) would you give to someone who would participate for the first time?
Come quietly, this race is really atypical and open to all. Nor is it an Antarctic dive 😉 Do not cover too much for the race (I know that the choice of equipment is always a haunting question for the new ones), it’s a trap to avoid if you burn in the race you’re in trouble to get to the end. And above all, enjoy the magic of this unique place 😉
Supskin : Paddlesuits – by paddlers for paddlers. Pioneering high-performance stand-up paddling water wear since 2011.
How it all started
Wolfi found himself participating in the Austrian SUP Championships 2011. Disappointed by his loss, he started training like the competitive beast he is. But winter arrived fast and no suitable clothing existed – Wolfi had to take matters in his own hands.
After experimenting with various ideas, he made the world’s first paddle suit prototype in his basement in Bad Mitterndorf, Styria. It kept him warm and on the water the whole winter. At the first race of next season, all other competitors carried their winter training deficit… and Wolfi won the race.
Overwhelmed by the response, Brigitte and Wolfi founded SUPSKIN and began producing suits for most of the SUP racing community and ambitious paddlers in need of functional winter wear.
